Introduction Air,
this simple three letter word, the magical gas that we can't even imagine
ourselves living without it. Because it's simply the secret of life itself.
Humans, animals and plants always need air, we need it too in most of the
industries we have today, and simply there's no single creature can live without
air.
What does air mean to us? have you ever asked your self this question? and if
you have, did you ask yourself what the secrets of that amazing gas are, or how
you can share in solving the most dangerous problem we ever had? Air
pollution...well if you did or even tried to, That means that you care, it also
means that you can join us in our attempt to solve that problem and in order to
solve it we have to know first everything about air, then about pollution,
finally how we can really share in solving that problem.
It is a mixture of gases surrounding any celestial object that has a gravitational field strong enough to prevent the gases from escaping; especially the gaseous envelope of the earth. The main components of the atmosphere of the earth are nitrogen (78%) and oxygen (21%). The atmospheric gases in the remaining 1% are argon (0.9%), carbon dioxide (0.03%), amounts of water vapor, and amounts of hydrogen, ozone, methane, carbon monoxide, helium, neon, krypton, and xenon. The layers of
the atmosphere?
The atmosphere may be divided into several layers. In the lowest one, the
troposphere, the temperature as a rule decreases upward at the rate of 5.5° C
per 1000 m (3° F per 1000 ft). This is the layer in which most clouds occur.
The troposphere extends up to about 16 km (about 10 mi) in tropical regions (to
a temperature of about -79° C, or about -110° F) and to about 9.7 km (about 6
mi) in temperate latitudes (to a temperature of about -51° C, or about -60°
F)).
Above the troposphere is the stratosphere. In the lower stratosphere the
temperature is practically constant or increases slightly with altitude,
especially over tropical regions. Within the ozone layer the temperature rises
more rapidly, and the temperature at the upper boundary of the stratosphere,
almost 50 km (about 30 mi) above sea level, is about the same as the temperature
at the surface of the earth. The layer from 50 to 80 km (30 to 50 mi), called
the mesosphere, is characterized by a marked decrease in temperature as the
altitude increases..
What is
pollution? Pollution is known
as disturbance of the balance between the constituents of the environment due to
new changes causing harmful effect to this constituents . What are the kinds of
pollution ? Environmental
pollution is branched to many kinds and types of pollutions, the main kinds of
pollution are: 1-The Air
pollution: Will be discussed in details… 2-The Water
pollution: Which is the change in the water's content that leads to a
disturbance in its chemical system. 3-The earth and the
soil pollution: Which is in general, as a result of precipitation of harmful
materials which caused by factories, farms, houses and restaurants. 4-The Sound
pollution: Which is the continuous change in different shapes of sound waves, as
it crosses the limits of sound intensity allowed to ears. 5-The Petroleum
pollution: It is leaking or explosions in petroleum sources or the corrosion in
the underwater petroleum pipes. 6-The Acidic rains:
It is the dissolving of the cabritic and nitrogenic gases which evolves from
factories smokers in the water vapor of the ozone layer, which causes
destruction in the elements of environment. 7-The pollution
caused by insecticides: Over using the insecticides caused disturbance in the
environmental balance. 8-The pollution
caused by drugs and medicines: A lot of drugs are wrong used and over using it
causes very dangerous problems. 9-Food pollution:
It is the food which is contaminated with germs which causes diseases or any
natural or chemicals materials which leads to poisoning of food .
What is Air
Pollution? You
are with your family in the car, stuck in traffic and the car in front of you
is producing a smelly, black cloud of smoke. The car's fumes are not the only
thing polluting the air! Dirty chemicals from factories, fumes from engines,
and gases from power plants foul the air and threaten everyone's health.
Air pollution is anything that is in the air that should not be there. It can
be a solid, liquid, or gas. We can't always see air pollution, we can't always
smell it, and we can't always taste it. So how do we know it's there?
Air
pollution is all around us. It has even been found at the North Pole! Because
air is always moving, air pollution doesn't always stay in the area that it
was made in. Scientists have to use special equipment to test the air for
pollution. They use some machines to catch different gases to tell them what
they are and how much of the gas there is. Other machines are used to catch
tiny solid lumps from the air. They call the solids "particulates."
These particulates can be dirt, smoke, or even pollen from plants.
Air pollution comes from many places. It can come from cars, trucks, trains,
planes, and boats! In fact, practically any kind of vehicle creates air
pollution. It also comes from factories, gas stations, power plants, and even
our houses. At home, we cause air pollution every time we turn on a light
because we use electricity to power the light. Grilling out in the backyard,
also causes air pollution.
One way in which we can't help but produce air pollution is by breathing! Most
creatures on earth breathe in oxygen and breathe our carbon dioxide which is an
air pollutant. What
are the sources of air pollution?
Pollutants materials constituents are defined as the microbes or the solids ,
the liquid , or the gaseous materials or radiation causing harmful effect to
environmental constituents.
Do You Produce Air Pollution? Everyone produces air pollution, the difference is that
some people produce more than others. Did you take a shower, use a blow dryer, have toast for
breakfast? Anytime that you use electricity, you create a little air pollution.
How did you get to school? If you walked, rode a bike or skateboard you did a
great job and produced no air pollution. Did you ride the bus or ride with
friends? This is often called ride-sharing. If you did rideshare, you made some
pollution, but you get to share it with the friends you traveled with so you
still did a good job! Did your mom or dad drive you to school? This produced the
most pollution! This is because the journey was made just for you and so you do
not get to share the amount of pollution with everyone else travelling in the
vehicle.
Air pollution harms the environment, you, your family, your friends, and
possibly even your pets can make it difficult for us to breathe. It can make our
eyes itchy and our throats sore. People with a breathing problem called asthma
must be extra careful as polluted air can make them have a dangerous asthma
attack
Air pollution also hurts wildlife. Birds, animals, fish, insects, plants,
in fact almost all life on earth is harmed by air pollution. One way that
wildlife can be affected is when the air pollutes the rain that falls out of the
sky.
