Five ways to choose heroes

How can we choose our heroes? How can we display the kind of characteristics we admire in heroes? well we can see heroes every where if we agreed with (Betty Deramus) a columnist for the Detroit news who said" A hero is simply someone who rises above his/her own weaknesses, for an hour, a day, a year, to do something stirring". If we think about it, we can name countless individuals who have the qualities of a hero, historical figures, friends and neighbors, even children!

Popular personalities: Students can choose individuals they admire and place a handmade "portraits, poems, or any thing they can present about that individual". Each character will be accompanied by a paragraph that describes the attributes possessed by the individual that make him/her a role model and a hero.

Heroic efforts  Every where on our planet there are many people who are lending a hand to people in developing countries. Those who are in need of clean drinking water, who lack medical care, and who face the ever-present danger of forgotten landmines. There are many people who help those who need help and they are really heroes who are trying to make life better for others. We can consider them as heroes, and maybe we can help them in their organizations.

Articles to be featured in a classroom magazine: More often than not, heroes are normal people, not only celebrities about whom you can find stories while you are reading a newspaper or watching TV or surfing the internet you can also  find stories about ordinary people whom we can consider as heroes and then you can collect their stories in your classroom magazine.

Top 20 heroes: Another way to have a hero is by  naming 20 heroes of he last century, it wouldn't be an easy task! But all you have to do is reading the stories about heroes, and their lives, then you have to tell your class the story, try with them to divide the list into smaller groups. Then ask your self questions like…how are these people alike or different? If you have to select the most important member of the list, who would it be? And why?

Model of the month: Calendars can display more than puppies and poster people !why not you with the help of your class make a calendar of role models, one for each month of the year? And this can help with a new personality to admire every month.
